Burjaya GEN Malaysia refuses to negotiate second Malaysian casino

On Friday, Edge Financial Media released a statement on behalf of lottery expert Berjaya Corp Bhd's Malaysian businessman Vincent Tan, in what it described as an "inaccurate" report on the possibility of a second casino opening in Malaysia. According to previous reports, the casino was to be set up in Forest City, a struggling real estate development company in Malaysia's Johor province, just off Singapore.

On Thursday, Malaysia's political leader, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, described Bloomberg's report on the subject as "a lie" and "not true."

The Edge quoted Berjaya Corp as saying on Friday: "The article in question, titled 'Malaysia is in talks with entrepreneurs about casinos to revive $100 billion Forest City' (Bloomberg LP) and 'Malaysia is in talks about casinos in Forest City' (The Edge Singapore), contains inaccurate information we believe was involved in discussions with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim regarding the Forest City project."

Referring to Mr Tan's honorifics in Malaysia and his full Chinese name, the statement added: "We want to make it clear that Mr Tan Sri Dato's Seri Vincent Tanchi Yiun did not participate in those discussions and refute the inaccurate allegations presented in the article."

Lim Kok-tai of the global casino group Genting also reportedly attended the Forest City-themed conference.

Meanwhile, Genting Malaysia Bhd said it was not involved in discussions about the possibility of opening a casino in Johor, the NewStraits Times reported, citing a statement from the company.

"Neither the company nor Tan Sririm were involved in such discussions or meetings, and the allegations made are untrue," the company said in a statement.

"We ask all parties to immediately stop the publication and dissemination of misinformation, remove untrue claims and provide clarification to the public to prevent further confusion," it added.

Genting currently operates Resorts World Genting, Malaysia's only casino resort, in Genting Highlands outside the capital Kuala Lumpur.

The Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, who is also currently the sultan of Johor province, Malaysia's ceremonial monarch, owns more than 20% of the joint venture vehicles involving Forest City's master developer, Chinese real estate firm Country Garden Holdings, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.
