Wasaga Beach has received its first payment for a new casino

Last week was one of the celebrations at Wasaga Beach, where the town received its first game allocation for hosting the Playtime Casino Wasaga Beach. On Friday, January 27, 2023, representatives of the Ontario Lottery and gaming company handed the town's mayor, Brian Smith, the first game revenue-sharing check worth over C$152,000.

Playtime Casino Wasaga Beach is run by Gateway Casino & Entertainment, one of Canada's leading track and field game operators. The company's new casino properties opened at the end of November 2022, and therefore were not fully operational for the entire third quarter of the fiscal year 2022-2023, or for 90 days. Payment was operated for 39 days.

Mayor Brian Smith on Friday accepted a commemorative check he received from OLG at a special event marking the grand opening of Casino Amenity. He said the number 39 days would be one to remember, and that he is now looking forward to seeing the first full payment for the entire quarter of OLG's fiscal year come with useful funds for the town.

The Playtime Casino Real Estate opened at the end of November 2022, but on Friday the casino held a formal ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate its opening. It has been more than two months since it opened soft than last year. Under the agreement, the town receives 5.25% of first slot revenue of C$65 million and 3% of next slot revenue of C$135 million.

In addition to the first OLG check, the town also received a C$5,000 check from Gateway Casino & Entertainment's Gateway Gives program, which will be donated to Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank. This was part of the casino sharing part of its food and beverage sales at the operator's trademark Match Restaurant and Public House.

Carrie Kormos, the casino operator's chief marketing and communications officer, said the property in Wasaga Beach stands out when compared to the company's other amenities. She explained that the company has received a warm welcome from the community since the day it announced its plans for the area. The company has invested CA$34.3 million in casinos employing 140 people.

With the new fund, the town will have to find a way to invest it. Previously, the town's administration carried out a public engagement process, where city staff presented a draft policy to the council. The mayor said the final version of the policy from December 2022 will be announced at the parliamentary table for discussion in the near future.

In preparation for the opening of casino properties, Gateway Casino held a recruitment fair in the summer of 2022 to recruit 140 positions of staff. Held at Wasaga Beach Recplex, 1724 Mosley Street, some of the positions available were chefs, bartenders, servers, dishwashers, hosts, cages and coin attendants, slot technicians, security and maintenance.
